First responders were dispatched to Enviro Waste Oil Recovery LLC on Friday, Jan. 18, leading to a full response from fire crews and paramedics. Mahopac Fire Chief Bill Nikisher was the first on scene and took over control as crews went to work.
Due to difficult confines, a second call was made to bring in additional manpower to battle the dumpster fire. According to the Mahopac Fire Department, a passing fire captain from Yorktown also stopped at the scene to offer assistance. Police officers from Carmel also worked the scene to ensure the safety of first responders.
Putnam County HazMat responded, as did the Town of Carmel Building Inspector, Mike Carnazza, along with Batt.#16 George Waehler and Batt.#15 Doug Casey. EMStar had a paramedic unit on the scene standing by and two agents from the Dept. of Homeland Security Emergency Services responded when the call for foam was dispatched.
Fire crews quickly worked to knock down the flames and the fire was swiftly extinguished. No injuries were reported and first responders announced that the scene was clear shortly more than an hour after they received the initial call.
